This conclave, in which Morocco was represented by the Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports, Chakib Benmoussa, was an opportunity to discuss the integration of sustainable education into teaching programs and ways to improve access to green education resources in education systems.

Speakers shared best practices adopted by various parties to promote the essential role of education in the sustainable development agenda.

They also exchanged views on mobilizing global resources and building partnerships to arrive at effective and efficient mechanisms to move forward and combine efforts to create the necessary momentum for developing a vision for the future of education and its key role in addressing the most pressing challenges facing humanity.

In a speech on this occasion, Mr. Benmoussa indicated that this meeting offers the opportunity to mobilize and activate a network of international actors engaged in the development of the capacities of young people in sustainable development and the sharing of educational approaches, good practices and relevant solutions and innovations, in addition to topics related to financing.

This initiative is part of the dynamic launched by UNESCO and the “Partnership for Green Education”, with regard to aligning the education system with sustainable development goals, noted the minister, adding that this alignment necessarily requires a real awareness of future generations on the issues related to sustainable development, with the aim of encouraging their involvement and commitment in this societal project.

Mr. Benmoussa indicated that the educational challenge is to enable learners to form an informed opinion on these complex issues, while allowing them to make choices in terms of prevention, mitigation or treatment, stressing that it is not possible to promote the culture of sustainable development without strengthening the integration of environmental citizenship in curricula and school life and without the commitment of educational institutions to transform themselves into appropriate spaces to apply these concepts and realize them on the ground.

Educating and teaching children requires anticipating future challenges, preparing them to face them and contributing positively to shaping the world for which they will be responsible, the minister stressed, noting that “this new way of seeing the world is also a new way of seeing oneself and creating a relationship with others.”

From this point of view, concluded Mr. Benmoussa, Morocco expresses its adherence to the “Declaration on the Joint Program for Education and Climate Change”, noting that the Kingdom has already expressed its willingness to share its experiences and best practices within the framework of solid bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
