Singapore Police Sergeant Charged in False Work Pass Conspiracy

A Singapore police sergeant and a Myanmar national have been charged with offenses related to a fraudulent work pass application, raising concerns about potential breaches in the country’s Employment of Foreign Manpower Act (EFMA). The case highlights the ongoing efforts to safeguard the integrity of Singapore’s foreign worker system.

Ahmad Aidil Jumari, 37, faces charges under the EFMA after allegedly conspiring with New Zar Win, 33, to submit a false statement regarding her employment. Court documents indicate that Jumari purportedly stated he would employ New Zar Win as a domestic worker at his residence on Senja Road. However, authorities allege there was no genuine intention to provide such employment.

Allegations of a False Application

The alleged conspiracy centers around a work pass application submitted around June 2023. According to the charges, Jumari falsely claimed he would employ New Zar Win as a domestic helper. This claim is now disputed, with court filings suggesting the arrangement was misrepresented to facilitate the application process.

New Zar Win also faces a similar charge under the EFMA. In addition to the work pass allegations, she is accused of working as a freelance part-time cleaner in multiple households between December 2023 and September 2024 without possessing a valid work permit. This secondary charge underscores the complexities of enforcing work pass regulations and addressing unauthorized employment.

Police Response and Internal Review

Following an investigation initiated by the Ministry of Manpower, the Singapore Police Force took swift action. On Oct. 2, police officials confirmed that Ahmad Aidil Jumari had been removed from front-line duties and reassigned to an administrative role.

“Officers of the Singapore Police Force are expected to uphold the law and maintain the highest standards of conduct and integrity,” a police spokesperson stated. “We are unable to comment further as court proceedings are ongoing.” This decisive action signals the force’s commitment to maintaining public trust and addressing misconduct within its ranks.

Upcoming Court Date and Potential Plea

The cases of both Ahmad Aidil Jumari and New Zar Win have been adjourned to Oct. 21. New Zar Win is anticipated to enter a guilty plea on that date, potentially leading to a swift resolution of her involvement in the matter. The outcome of Jumari’s case remains to be seen, but the charges carry significant implications for his career and reputation.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to Singapore’s stringent labor laws and the consequences of attempting to circumvent the established processes for employing foreign workers. The ongoing legal proceedings will undoubtedly be closely watched by both the public and those involved in the employment of foreign nationals.
