The COP29 ministerial meeting will take place in Wuhan, China, later this week, following the 8th Ministerial Meeting on Climate Action (MoCA) initiated by China, the EU and Canada.

This was stated on July 22 by COP29 Executive Director Elnur Soltanov in Shusha at the panel discussion “Solidarity for a “green” world – COP29”, Day.Az reports on Monday with reference to Trend.

According to him, after the ministerial meeting on COP29 in Wuhan at the end of the month, a meeting of experts will be held in Shamakhi.

“This is a very important event. It will start in China and will continue its work at the expert level in Shamakhi. Then an international meeting on COP29 is planned for September, after which a meeting of the preparatory committee for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will take place,” Soltanov said.

According to him, all negotiations within the COP29 framework are proceeding successfully, and Azerbaijan hopes to maintain this accelerated pace.

The COP29 Executive Director recalled that the climate summit in Baku on November 11-22 will discuss: climate finance and its new models, Article 6 of the Paris Climate Agreement, the work of the current loss and damage fund, several transition programs (from fossil fuels to low-carbon).

“We must aim for zero emissions by 2050 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. Today, the world consumes 97 million barrels of oil per day, but by 2050, this figure is planned to be reduced to 25-30 million barrels per day. Gas consumption is planned to be reduced by 2050 from the current 4 trillion cubic meters per year to 1 trillion cubic meters per year, coal consumption – from 8 billion tons per year to 1 billion tons per year. This will allow us to achieve NetZero,” Soltanov added.

It should be noted that the largest emissions into the atmosphere come from the oil, gas and coal extraction and export sectors, causing global warming and climate cataclysms.
