COP29 is critical to continuing global efforts to mitigate climate change.

As reported on Sunday by Day.Az, this is stated in an article published by the Mexican publication Milenio.

“2024 marks a major milestone in the global fight against climate change. Baku, Azerbaijan will host the UN Climate Change Conference this November. The event, known as COP29, is critical to continuing global efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Azerbaijan, a country at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, is demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable development and the transition to a low-carbon economy,” the article says.

The author believes that in today’s unstable world, the topic of climate change is crucial for the survival of civilization.

“The world needs to unite around this existential question. It is encouraging that a country like Azerbaijan, known for its inclusiveness and multiculturalism, which recently chaired the Non-Aligned Movement and has been active in many important international issues, has stepped forward to take up this challenge and has received broad support from the international community. Azerbaijan was a pioneer in the oil industry in the 19th century, and now the fact that countries that were the first to engage in this industry are taking the problem of climate change seriously is encouraging,” the article says.

The article emphasizes that Azerbaijan has achieved significant success in the field of sustainable development.

“The country has invested in renewable energy, especially solar and wind energy, and adopted policies to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. With its strategic location and significant natural resources, Azerbaijan is becoming a regional leader in clean energy. The total energy potential of the Caspian Sea in terms of offshore wind power plants is 157 GW. Azerbaijan stands out as one of the countries with the greatest potential in renewable energy and technical capabilities.

In addition, the country has recently built solar power plants such as Garadagh (230 MW) and Shafag (240 MW), the Khizi-Absheron wind farm (240 MW), and has implemented additional projects in both wind and hydroelectric power plants. These initiatives reflect Azerbaijan’s commitment to expanding its renewable electricity generation capabilities as part of its strategy to achieve at least 30% of its energy supply from renewable energy sources by 2030,” the article says.

The author recalls that Mexico, under the leadership of President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, a recognized environmental activist, has emphasized the importance of commitment to the issue of climate change.

“Mexico, as an important player in the international arena and a member of the G20, can demonstrate its commitment and active participation in this important issue, also taking into account the excellent bilateral relations with Azerbaijan.

Both countries face similar challenges in adapting to climate change and transitioning to renewable energy. Mexico has been hit hard by the effects of climate change, with catastrophic events such as the recent hurricanes that devastated Acapulco. These disasters disproportionately affect the poorest segments of society, highlighting the need for effective and equitable climate policies,” the article says.

As noted in the article, at the global level, carbon emissions remain a significant challenge.

“According to the latest IPCC report, it is important that developed countries provide adequate financing to developing countries so that they can implement effective mitigation and adaptation strategies. In this context, Mexico and other developing countries can benefit from the climate finance that will be discussed at COP29. This financing is vital for green infrastructure projects, renewable energy and climate resilience programs.

The COP29 agenda will include discussions on climate finance mechanisms, implementation of the Paris Agreement and international cooperation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, topics such as climate justice, resilience of vulnerable communities and technological innovation to combat climate change are expected to be addressed,” the author writes.

The article goes on to say that relations between Azerbaijan and Mexico have strengthened further in recent years.

“Both countries share interests in areas such as education, culture and, especially, environmental protection. Cooperation in sustainable development projects can benefit both countries by allowing the exchange of knowledge and green technologies.

COP29 in Azerbaijan represents an invaluable opportunity for countries to strengthen their climate commitments and collaborate on innovative solutions. For Mexico, under the leadership of Claudia Sheinbaum, this conference will be a platform to reaffirm its commitment to environmental protection and explore new international alliances,” the author concludes.
