COP29 President, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Mukhtar Babayev sent the first official letters to the governments of COP29 participating countries with the objectives of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
He announced this on Friday in Baku during the presentation of the Action Plan for Azerbaijan’s presidency of COP29, Day.Az reports.
The letters note that reaching a global agreement on a new climate finance target will be a key point of negotiations at the upcoming 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The official letters also call on governments participating in the Paris Climate Agreement (198 countries) to submit updated national climate plans to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
“The definition of a new collective quantitative goal on climate finance (NCQG) will also be a priority issue at COP29. It is necessary to agree on an ambitious and realistic goal on climate finance, taking into account the needs and priorities of developing countries that are parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change,” Babayev noted.
