COP29 can serve as an important platform for promoting the 18th national SDG project promoted by Azerbaijan in the international community.

As Day.Az reports on Monday with reference to Trend, this was announced by Deputy Minister of Economy of Azerbaijan Sahib Mammadov during a meeting of the Joint Government-UN Steering Committee for the implementation of the UN-Azerbaijan Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2021-2025 “.

“With COP29, we can better inform stakeholders about the implementation of projects based on the concepts of “carbon neutrality” in the Karabakh and East Zangezur economic regions. However, the ongoing threat of mining in these areas not only threatens lives, but also slows down the process of economic revival. The mines put serious pressure on the ecological environment of the region as a whole. It is no coincidence that Azerbaijan put forward the initiative to add mine action to the UN agenda as the 18th sustainable development goal until 2030. COP29 can also serve as an important platform for promoting the 18th national SDG project, promoted by Azerbaijan in the international community,” he said.

It should be noted that the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Azerbaijan this November. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Within two weeks, Baku, having become the center of the world, will receive about 70-80 thousand foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) stands for Conference of the Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

There are 198 countries that are parties to the convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
