Because of the tournament
America’s Cup It is the South American football championship for national teams that belong to CONMEBOL. It usually takes place every second year.
The participating countries are the members of CONMEBOL Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru and Chile. Since 1993, two countries have also been invited to participate. Until now it was Costa Rica (1997, 2001, 2004, 2011), Honduras (2001), Jamaica (2015), Japan (1999 and 2019), Mexico (1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2011, 2015), United States of America (1993, 1995) and Qatar (2019). Canada in 2001, but withdrew for security reasons.
In 2016, the competition celebrated its 100th anniversary with Copa América Centenario. Hosted by the USA, this was the first time the competition was held outside of South America. It was also expanded to 16 teams (normally 12), and six countries CONCACAF had to. Chile ended up winning this year.
Copa América was held for the first time on 2-17 July 1916 in connection with the celebration of 100 years of independence of Argentina. The competition ran until 1975 South American National Team Championship (South American Championship for national teams), but changed its name to Copa América in 1975.
