Copa América: on penalties, Canada eliminates Venezuela to face Argentina in semi-final

by time news

On Friday night (5), Canada qualified for the semi-finals of the Copa América. At the At&T Stadium, after a 1-1 draw against real time, the Canadian team defeated Venezuela on penalties 4-3, and will now face Argentina in the next stage of the competition.

Overall, the game was very busy, with both teams creating good chances and creating danger for the opponent’s goal, with a slight Canadian lead. At 13 minutes, David made a beautiful play and Shaffelburg opened the scoring. Inspired by the quartet of Laryea, David, Shaffelburg and Larin, Canada wasted numerous chances to increase the score. Amazingly, all four chances were missed in the first half, and Soteldo tried to lead Venezuela to attack with the help of Salomón Rondón.

In the second half, the proceedings were more even and both teams had chances. Eduard Bello received a cross and hit it first time, but the Canadian goalkeeper saw off an excellent save. Soon after, the Venezuelan equalizer arrived. After a shot from the defense, the ball fell to Rondón in midfield, who beat the defender to the body and hit from distance, through cover, to score a great goal at At&T Stadium.

After Venezuela’s draw, Millar and David had chances to break the tie, but they didn’t finish well. Those who also came close to the goal were Johnston, Ali Ahmed and Koné, but all were ineffective and did not get the tie off the scoreboard.

On penalties, both teams wasted good chances and the one who made the fewest mistakes ran: Herrera, Savarino and Ángel lost against Venezuela, while only Millar and Eustaquio were missed for the Canadians. The highlight was goalkeeper Crépeau, who took two shots. Therefore, Canada won 4-3 and now face Argentina, who took a penalty, after a 1-1 draw in normal time, to eliminate Ecuador and secure themselves among the top four in the Copa América.
