Dhe future of generative AI may emerge in the offices of start-ups and tech giants. But she also decides in court. Because all the artificial intelligences that write texts, paint pictures and compose songs on human command are based on the works of people: They sucked texts, pictures and songs from the Internet in order to learn with them how to generate something new themselves. The human authors of these works were neither rewarded nor could they object to their creations becoming training material for the machines. They are now opposing this practice. They want to sue the makers of the AIs legally, while lawyers ask themselves whether the basic principles of copyright law have grown in this new world.

One of the most recent examples that shows how complicated legal considerations are is the case of photographer Robert Kneschke. He specializes in stock photography. That is, he shoots photos of everyday situations, such as seniors in gym class or office workers at their desks, and sells them through photo agencies. These images appear on the web, for example as illustrations for articles.
