Córdoba Blood & Tissue Donation Efforts See Sustained Activity, Face December Shortfall
Córdoba, Spain – The province of Córdoba has demonstrated consistent performance in blood, plasma, and tissue donation throughout the year, but health officials are urging residents to bolster donation numbers in December to meet increasing hospital demands. A total of 26,559 donations – encompassing blood, plasma, plateletpheresis, autotransfusions, and bone marrow typing – were recorded this year, according to recent data.
The province has maintained a stable donor base of 16,437 individuals, mirroring figures from the previous year. Of these,9,376 were men and 7,061 were women,with 1,976 representing new donors. Recruitment efforts have proven successful, with 388 new donors identified at fixed locations and 1,588 through mobile donation teams.
“These data reflect sustained performance in the activity of the Córdoba Transfusion and Tissue Center throughout this period,” a senior official stated.
However, officials have expressed concern over a potential shortfall in donations during December. Last year,the province recorded only 1,700 donations in December,falling short of hospital needs which typically rise during the holiday season due to festivities,travel,and seasonal illnesses. To surpass last year’s figures and ensure adequate supplies for 2025, a meaningful increase in donations is crucial in the coming weeks.
The Transfusion,Tissue and Cell Center (CTTC) of Córdoba has launched a special Christmas campaign aiming to collect 2,500 blood donations and 200 plasma donations.
Córdoba’s Tissue Bank: A Regional Hub
The activity of the Tissue Bank in Córdoba, operating in conjunction with the Malaga Centre, is a vital resource for all of Andalusia, exceeding 1,300 grafts as of November 29. the bank’s operations encompass a wide range of tissues, supporting critical medical procedures across the region.
in the Bone Bank, 100 donations yielded 2,542 bone pieces, with 842 specifically allocated for surgical procedures within Córdoba. The Cornea Bank processed 320 donations, resulting in 640 corneas, of which 427 were distributed to health centers throughout Córdoba.
Moreover, 296 fragments of amniotic membrane were obtained from eight donors, with 45 fragments sent to Córdoba for use in specialized treatments, particularly in ophthalmology and plastic and reconstructive surgery. The bank also facilitated the processing of 53 hearts, yielding 96 homografts, 11 of which were utilized at the Reina Sofía University Hospital.
