The Corinthians are expected to announce soon the signing of Dutch striker Memphis Depay, 30 years old, according to information from CNN obtained from the club’s management. The player will arrive in Brazil after a stint with Atlético de Madrid.
Famous for his performance on the fields with clubs like Barcelona, PSV, and Manchester United, Depay also boasts a musical career as a rapper since 2017, having released a song named after the world champion team in black and white.
His musical debut was with “LA Vibes”, which featured collaboration from fellow football player Quincy Promes, his teammate in the Dutch national team. Since then, Depay has released individual singles, participated in songs by other artists, and in 2020, he launched his first EP on digital platforms.
“Heavy Stepper EP” includes nine songs, among which is “2 Corinthians 5:7”, referencing a biblical passage from the book of Corinthians that conveys the following message: “It is God who has prepared us for this purpose, giving us the Spirit as a guarantee of what is to come. Therefore, we are always confident and know that while we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight.”
The connection between Depay’s music and Corinthians from São Paulo lies in the city of Corinth, in Greece. This city inspired the name of the English team that, during its tour in Brazil, inspired the founding of the club in the eastern zone of the São Paulo capital. It was also at the church there that Paul wrote epistles that were later included in the Bible and served as the basis for the composition of the song released by the Dutch player.
“2 Corinthians 5:7” has nearly 3.5 million streams on Spotify and is Depay’s second most listened-to song on the platform. On YouTube, the music video surpasses 4.6 million views. The player has 53,070 monthly listeners on the streaming service, about 0.07% of what Travis Scott, one of the leading names in rap today, presents.
