Amid the recent resurgence of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education sent an official document to each school on the 14th stating that confirmed COVID-19 patients and symptomatic patients are subject to school refusal.

The official document that the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education sent to elementary, middle, and high schools in Seoul on this day included the content that “those confirmed with an infectious disease (including those with symptoms) must suspend school attendance.” According to the Enforcement Decree of the School Health Act, principals can suspend school attendance if they are infected with an infectious disease, and COVID-19 is currently classified as a Class 4 infectious disease along with influenza and hand, foot, and mouth disease. If you are infected with one of these infectious diseases, your absence will be recognized as attendance for the number of days your doctor’s opinion indicates.

The Ministry of Education abolished the guidelines that set separate periods of suspension of in-person attendance for confirmed COVID-19 patients when the COVID-19 crisis level was lowered from ‘caution’ to ‘concern’ in May of this year. Nevertheless, since COVID-19 is still classified as an infectious disease and is spreading again, the intention is for each school principal to be alert and make decisions on suspension of in-person attendance.

Meanwhile, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education urgently allocated a budget of about 2.5 billion won to ensure that each school can purchase masks, disinfectants, etc. and conduct quarantine disinfection. A Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education official said, “Most of the self-diagnosis kits used during the COVID-19 pandemic have expired and cannot be used, so this is a measure to strengthen quarantine for the safety of students.”
