Corona in Russia: Putin’s great failure – death numbers at record level – politics abroad

by time news

It is becoming more and more evident how far-reaching control of the Kremlin is Corona-pandemic has lost.

On Friday, Russia reported new record deaths for the fourth day in a row: According to official information, 887 people died of Corona within 24 hours.

According to estimates by international observers, the actual number of deaths is likely to be much higher. Because: Contrary to the criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO), Russia only reports cases in its statistics in which people “died of” Corona.

Only the figures from the statistics authority also include – as is customary internationally – those who died “with” Corona. But these are not reported until weeks later. And it is also unclear whether the data is really correct.

According to official information, a total of around 209,000 people in Russia have died in connection with the virus.

Scientists also have doubts about the numbers: According to data analyst Dmitry Kobak from the University of Tübingen, there was an excess mortality rate of 624,000 in Russia from the beginning of the pandemic to the end of July, reports the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”. He estimates that around 150,000 more deaths have occurred since then.

▶ ︎ Means: The actual number of Covid deaths could be almost four times as high as reported.

Russians distrust their own vaccines

One of the reasons for the Corona failure of ruler Vladimir Putin (68) is the low vaccination rate in Russia. Just 29 percent of the population are fully vaccinated. The mistrust in the state and its vaccines is huge.

For comparison: In Germany, more than 64 percent have been fully vaccinated.

Putin actually wanted to make his most important and early developed vaccine Sputnik V an export hit – and thus increase his influence in the world.

But it’s not just that the population doesn’t want the vaccine: Sputnik V is still not approved in the EU either. The WHO has also not yet given the green light to the vaccine. Numerous defects had been discovered in one of its production facilities.

Sputnik vaccination does not apply in Germany

On Friday, the Hessian Administrative Court also made it clear: Anyone who is vaccinated with Sputnik V has no right to a vaccination certificate in Germany.

The reason given by the court was that the vaccine was not approved in Germany. According to the information, a person who had received a first vaccination with Sputnik V in Moscow in May and a second in July in San Marino had sued. She therefore asked the Fulda district to issue a German vaccination certificate.
