Corona: Lower Saxony insists on “Christmas rest” – despite the low incidence – domestic policy

by time news

In no federal state is the hospital incidence of 2.92 as low as in Lower Saxony. From a purely legal point of view, 2G would not even have to apply in the state. Nevertheless, the red-black state government has tightened the corona measures.

▶ ︎ As of Sunday, FFP2 mask requirements apply in Lower Saxony, 2G in retail. Prime Minister Stephan Weil (62, SPD) even ordered a “Christmas rest” over the holidays.

“It is advisable to raise a dam if the flood is not there yet,” said Weil on Friday the “Evangelical Church Radio”.

The Lower Saxony boss is expecting a fifth wave because of the rampant Omikron variant: “That is why it makes sense to be clear about this and react accordingly now.”

▶ ︎ In Lower Saxony, therefore, the highest warning level 3 applies from December 24th to January 2nd. This means: Christmas markets, clubs and discos must close, for events with more than ten people and in hotels, 2G-Plus applies. Private meetings are limited to 25 people indoors (50 outdoors). Events with more than 500 people are prohibited.

Because: “If we are unlucky, the virus will celebrate with us,” explains Weil the fun brake.

▶ ︎ There are contact restrictions for unvaccinated people: You may meet a maximum of two people from another household (except children under 14). Anyone who already has a booster vaccination is exempt from the 2G plus rule.

What else is allowed: Christmas services, going to the gym or restaurant.

The state government does not shake the school holidays (December 23 to January 7). However, from December 20th, students can be exempted from class if their parents so wish.

Corona swatter for Weil

The tightened corona measures should actually apply from Saturday. But on Friday the Higher Administrative Court conceded the actually planned 2G-Plus rule for services close to the body (e.g. hairdressers).

Unvaccinated people should not be excluded from services that satisfy “basic body care needs”, according to the court. Prime Minister Weil had to delete the paragraph and postpone the regulation date to Sunday.

The Lower Saxony FDP leader Stefan Birkner accused Weil of having turned the Corona regulation into a “patchwork quilt”. The Prime Minister had “obviously said goodbye to any system and reliability”.
