It has been confirmed that the decline in the COVID-19 epidemic this summer has continued for two consecutive weeks, passing its peak.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency announced on the 6th that, as a result of analyzing the COVID-19 epidemic trends last week using a multi-layered surveillance system, it was determined that the COVID-19 epidemic peaked this summer.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency’s sample surveillance results, the number of hospitalized patients from the 25th to the 31st (week 35) was 837, a 42.8% decrease from the peak (1,464 from the 11th to the 17th), showing a large decrease for two consecutive weeks.
In the surveillance of severe acute respiratory infections, the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients was reported to be 49 from the 25th to the 31st. After peaking at 83 from the 4th to the 10th, it decreased for two consecutive weeks before increasing slightly compared to the previous week.
Since COVID-19 was classified as a Class 4 infectious disease, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency has been checking the number of COVID-19 hospitalized patients every week at 220 medical institutions with more than 200 beds nationwide.
In addition, 42 general hospital-level or higher medical institutions are currently assessing the number of hospitalized patients who have experienced a fever, have a high fever of 38 degrees or higher, have a cough, or have had symptoms within the past 10 days or require hospitalization.
In addition to the decrease in the number of hospitalized patients, the detection rate of the COVID-19 pathogen also decreased by 5 percentage points (p) compared to the previous week, reaching 34%. The concentration of the COVID-19 virus in sewage also decreased by 13 percentage points compared to the previous week.
The number of patients visiting the emergency room also increased from July, but decreased for two consecutive weeks from August 18 to 24. It decreased to 5,048 from the 25th to the 31st.
Director of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency Ji Young-mi said, “It is very important to follow the COVID-19 infection prevention guidelines during the Chuseok holiday when population movement, such as visiting parents in their hometown, is expected to increase and contact with the elderly is expected.” She continued, “High-risk groups, such as the elderly, should actively participate in the new COVID-19 vaccination in October.”
