Coronavirus updates on Thursday 21 October

In Italy the vaccination campaign is proceeding faster than the EU average and for this we must thank all citizens who have chosen to get vaccinated, especially young people, and those who have decided to do so after overcoming their hesitations. Prime Minister Mario Draghi said this in his speech yesterday to the Senate. Within the EU, the situation in Latvia is worrying, which returns to lockdown for almost a month due to the increase in infections: only half of the population vaccinated with two doses. And at the borders of the EU, in the UK we have returned to around 200 deaths a day. Meanwhile, the latest bulletin for Wednesday 20 October records 3,702 new cases and 33 deaths in Italy. Here is the map of the contagion in the world.

8.40 am – Medici Gb: reintroduce masks and spacing
British authorities should reintroduce the mandatory use of masks and social distancing in the face of the surge in Covid cases in the country. This was said by the British Medical Association, which denounced the unacceptable wave of infections and accused the ministers of being intentionally negligent for not wanting to impose the rules. Over the past eight days, the UK has recorded over 40,000 new positives per day and yesterday the Health Minister, Sajid Javid, warned that in winter this could reach 100,000 per day.

8.20 am – India, the billionth dose administered

India has administered its billionth dose of Covid vaccine, an essential milestone for a country that aims to complete the full immunization campaign for its 944 million adults by the end of the year. The country is currently administering about 5 million doses a day after the peak of 25 million reached in a single day in September. In eight states, 100% of adults received the first dose. Gratitude to the doctors, nurses and all those who worked on this enterprise, tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
