Coronavirus updates on Tuesday 1 December

Following the alarm for the diffusion of the new Omicron variant of Covid, the restrictions in all countries increase, also in view of the travels of the upcoming holidays. In Italy, the Ministry of Health has decided, through a circular, to return to the stricter rules in schools: we return to quarantine for the class after the first positive. Regarding the efficacy of current vaccines against the variant, both Moderna and Ema are informed that it will take about two weeks to obtain reliable data.
. In our country the
latest bulletin
, relating to Monday 29 November, of 7,975 cases and 65 deaths.

9.48 am – Caserta, 3 positives in the class of the patient zero child, yet to be verified that it is Omicron

Three other positives probably linked to the first case of the Omicron variant in Italy: it is a teacher and two classmates of one of the children of patient zero, the Eni manager of Caserta found positive for Omicron. The final results on the screening of teachers and classmates of the two minors revealed the new positives; sequencing will now need to be done to determine if it is indeed Omicron. At the moment there are therefore four cases of positivity to the South African variant found in Italy, all in Caserta and linked to the Eni manager.

9.44 – European stock exchanges again already for the Omicron variant

Start in the red for the main European stock exchanges after a positive start to the week. In the last session of November, the markets again plummeted into the uncertainty caused by the Omicron variant of the coronavirus after the statements of the number one of Moderna. In the first few minutes of trading in Europe, negative signs like those of the Dax which fell by 1.02% and the Cac40 which lost about 1.16%, already also the English Ftse 100 index which left on the ground the 1.34 percent. This morning in Asia and Oceania, among the main exchanges, only Sidney is saved.

9.14 – Mattarella: do not let your guard down against the resurgence of infections: collective responsibility is needed
the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message sent to the president of Confartigianato renewed his appeal to collective responsibility: The resurgence of infections reminds us not to let our guard down and reminds us of maximum responsibility in individual and collective behavior, to counter the circulation of the virus and not compromise the freedom that we have painstakingly regained in economic and social life.

9.14 Ema: We are ready for the worst, but we will know how to react. Vaccines will continue to protect, however

The executive director of the EMA, Emer Cooke, in a hearing at the Health Committee of the European Parliament on the Covid pandemic spoke about the new variant and its danger: We have plans and we work with international regulators, with the WHO, with the Ecdc. We are ready for the worst even if we hope for the best. And in relation to doubts about the efficacy of current vaccines against Omicron, Cook stressed that the data we have shows that the vaccines are effective and will continue to protect the population even with a possible spread of the Omicron variant. The two-week date is confirmed to have reliable scientific data in this sense.

9.04 – School: incidence of cases in school age at 125, above the thresholdl
Weekly incidence still growing in the number of new cases of Sars-CoV-2 infection, in school age, equal to 125 per 100,000 inhabitants in the period 19-25 November, a value far from the optimal value of 50 per 100,000, useful for a correct tracking of cases for which it is considered appropriate to temporarily suspend the “surveillance with testing” program. Thus the circular signed by the Director General of Prevention of the Ministry of Health, Gianni Rezza, and by the Head of the Department for Human, Financial and Instrumental Resources of the Ministry of Education, Jacopo Greco, which establishes Dad even with a single infection.

8.27 am – Modern CEO: Vaccines will struggle against the Omicron variant

Moderna CEO Ste’phane Bancel predicts a substantial drop in the effectiveness of current vaccines against Covid’s Omicron variant while it will take months to develop new effective vaccines. I think in no way the effectiveness can be the same as we had with Delta, Bancel said in an interview with the website Financial Times. Bancel is unable to quantify the extent of this substantial decline now, as it awaits specific data. But all the scientists I’ve talked to say it won’t be good, he concludes. The data will be available, Bancel says, within two weeks.
