In this new school year, where the trade unions intend to relaunch the question of wages, the trend has probably not escaped them. The margin rate of non-financial corporations rose for the third consecutive quarter in the spring. Over the period, this ratio, which relates the gross operating surplus (EBITDA) to the value added of the company, reached 33.2% against 31.7% during the previous three months, according to data published by the ‘Insee on August 31.

Economists themselves admit to being surprised. “This is 1.6 points more than in 2018 before the Covid crisis, and as much as in 2019 when the margin rate had been inflated by the double payment of the CICE. Despite the shocks, French companies are in a rather favorable financial situation. This was not the case after the 2008 crisis when their margin rate had fallen,” observes Mathieu Plane, economist at the OFCE.
