Armenian authorities have asked the United States to seize the mansion of former Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan in Massachusetts.
As Day.Az reports with reference to the Armenian media, prosecutor Sashik Avetisyan told the Public Television of Armenia about this.
“Given that Vigen Sargsyan, accused of money laundering, purchased a mansion in the United States with funds obtained illegally, the investigator decided to seize the property, which was approved by the court of general jurisdiction of Yerevan,” Avetisyan said.
As part of mutual legal assistance, a request to seize the property was also sent to the US authorities. In addition, 4 units of property in Yerevan were seized.
Let us remind you that on May 15, the Anti-Corruption Court of Armenia accepted another lawsuit from the Prosecutor General’s Office for the confiscation of illegal property. They want to confiscate from Sargsyan and a person associated with him real estate in Yerevan, either its market value, living space in the American state of Massachusetts, or the amount for which it was purchased ($2.05 million, or 941 million drams).
In October 2023, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia initiated criminal proceedings against former Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan, accusing him in absentia of abuse of office, which caused significant damage to the state. He is wanted in Armenia and, according to preliminary data, lives in the USA.
