The ‘la Caixa’ Foundation has organized free activities at the Science Museum this coming weekend to commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which vindicates the role of women scientists and is celebrated on February 11.

During the weekend of February 10 and 11, the CosmoCaixa Science Museum will host several sessions of the family workshop ‘Challenges of science. Great contributions from women scientists‘, a gymkhana that will test the attendees’ ability to solve puzzles that will allow us to learn about the great contributions of female scientists throughout history.

Through experimentation and encouraging reasoning and critical thinking, the workshop, recommended for ages 8 and up, will allow you to meet five female researchers that revolutionized optics, electricity, magnetism, mechanics or acoustics.

The five profiles that will be discovered are that of the researcher of technology applied to solar energy Maria Telkes; pioneering electronic sound composition engineer Daphne Oram; the first engineer to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Leena Gade; aerospace scientist Annie Easley, and Johanna Weber, whose aerodynamic experiments were key to developing the Concorde supersonic aircraft.

The CosmoCaixa Science Museum will also include a commented tour of the exhibition ‘They in science. The essential contribution of women to the scientific world’, with a morning visit and another afternoon visit on February 10 and 11 to meet some of the female figures who made important scientific contributions throughout history.

On the occasion of the Santa Eulàlia Winter Festival in Barcelona, on February 11 the CosmoCaixa will offer an open day, with which attendees will be able to access the museum for free and visit the ‘Dinosaurs of Patagonia’ exhibition, as well as participate in the activities organized on the occasion of the ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science’ free of charge.
