The managing entity of the water supply in Costa Rica reported that it cannot guarantee 100% of the service in the country due to the lack of rain in the dry season in Costa Rica (November-May) and the drought caused by the El Niño phenomenon.

“The flows of surface sources have been reduced by up to 85% (in the Greater San José Metropolitan Area), it is impossible to guarantee water 24/7,” said Juan Manuel Quesada, executive president of the Costa Rican Institute, in a press conference. of Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA), managing government entity.

For weeks, residents of various areas of the capital, which concentrates half of Costa Rica’s 5.1 million inhabitants, have been suffering scheduled cuts in the supply of drinking water. Some neighborhoods even go days without having water.

San José is naturally supplied with water from the rains in the Central mountain range that crosses the country from north to south, but the lack of rainfall forced the authorities to intervene in the supply.
