Costa Rica will host the 19th Meeting of the Committee on Tourism and Sustainability of UN Tourism

The Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica and UN Tourism signed an agreement that officially names the country as the host of the 19th Meeting of the Committee on Tourism and Sustainability (CTS). The event will take place on September 9 and 10, 2024 in San José and will be attended by representatives and delegates from more than 10 countries, as well as international guests.

Costa Rica’s Minister of Tourism, William Rodríguez, highlighted the country’s readiness to lead the meeting in a spirit of collaboration and responsibility. “We look forward to the September plenary of the Committee on Tourism and Sustainability and are committed to ensuring that it is a productive and memorable event. We appreciate the support of member countries and reaffirm our dedication to promoting truly sustainable tourism,” said Rodríguez. For his part, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arnoldo André, stressed that the signing of the agreement reaffirms Costa Rica’s commitment to responsible tourism management at the national and global level. “Tourism acts as a bridge for dialogue and cooperation between our nations, facilitating communication and collaboration,” said André. “In this context, Costa Rica is committed to promoting responsible tourism that benefits our communities and strengthens our diplomatic relations,” he added.

During the CTS meeting, topics such as the evolution and trends in certifications for the tourism sector and the challenges and advances posed by the new standards promoted by the European Union will be addressed. These discussion points are crucial for the sustainable development of tourism in the member countries.

The World Tourism Organization, UN Tourism, is a specialized agency of the United Nations, composed of 166 countries and territories and over 500 affiliate members representing the private sector, educational institutions, tourism associations and local tourism authorities. The STC is a subsidiary technical body of the Executive Council and is composed of 8 countries and 2 affiliate members.
