The Council of State made the decision to annul the election of congressman Jorge ‘Tito’ Murcia, representative to the Chamber for Huila.

The high court found that the Huila politician engaged in double militancy, an aspect that undermines the integrity of the democratic process.

According to the opinion of the Council of State, at the time of its election, Murcia had the endorsement of Cambio Radical, but still maintained its affiliation with the Conservative Party. The Fifth Chamber of this institution determined that this partisan duality invalidates his nomination and his eventual occupation of the position.

The controversy lies in the period between Murcia’s resignation from the Conservative Party, presented on October 19, 2021, and his registration as a candidate for Cambio Radical on December 10 of the same year. A period that, according to regulations, does not meet the requirements established to avoid double militancy.

The ruling of the Council of State confirms the double militancy of Jorge Murcia, corroborating what was previously stated by the Radical Change Ethical Control Council.

The Electoral Council should not have revoked the decision of this group. Great news for women’s participation in politics regarding #Women’sDay, who will occupy this seat will be our Huila leader, Lus Pastrana,” they wrote from the Radical Change Party Account.

Given the vacancy left by Murcia, it will be Luz Pastrana who will assume the position. She occupied the third seat within Cambio Radical.

“I receive this news with great happiness and hope. Proud to belong to this party where women have important spaces for representation! We are ready to work for our department and for our country with the greatest commitment and with the hand of God,” Pastrana commented.
