The Russian Embassy in Libya denied what Reuters news agency published about the counterfeit Libyan dinar printed by Russia.

The Russian embassy described the British newspaper’s article as funny, saying that it is not surprising that London continues, at certain times, to raise a topic that makes Libyans laugh, and the basis for the spread of information is unnamed sources and an expert from the British Research Institute in France, Jalal Harchaoui.

The embassy noted that another source from the British intelligence service “MI6” was named a specialist, and for the sake of diversity they called him “The Sentry” with a standard set of tasks – to expose corruption and war crimes, according to the embassy.

The Russian embassy pointed out that as far as all official bodies that actually have information and “can expose these slanders” are concerned, they refused to comment on the article, so as not to embarrass and upset the authors, as it put it.

The British Reuters news agency quoted “three informed sources” as saying that unofficial Libyan banknotes in the east of the country were replaced with real dollars, which contributed to the decline in the value of the Libyan dinar.

According to the agency, the sources said that some of these banknotes were printed by Russia and exported to eastern Libya this year, while other banknotes were printed illegally inside Libya.

A government source and a banking source in eastern Libya told Reuters that the money was used to finance infrastructure projects in the eastern region, while a diplomatic source said the money could also be used to finance the activities of Russian mercenaries in Libya and the Sahel region of Africa.
