jpnn.comJAKARTA – Law is like a ship. Ethics is its ocean. So the ship of law cannot sail to the shores of the island of justice if the ocean is dry.

The adage delivered by Jimly Asshiddiqie in the focus group discussion (FGD) on the Fragility of State Administrators’ Ethics with the theme of Legal Culture at Hasanuddin University, Makassar, South Sulawesi, Tuesday (17/9/2024), carries a profound message regarding the correlation between ethics and law.

Ethics are the source of all problems of the degradation of a just legal culture, so that downstream there is a decline in the state in all aspects, including democracy, social, political and economic aspects.

“Now one of the most talked about issues is ethics. This is the momentum to make improvements. Since 2009 I have promoted the importance of organizing the ethics system of the nation and state,” he said.

Humans as the driving force of law must be ensured to be free from unethical values if they want to realize the ideals of a just legal culture.

On the other hand, a fragile and collapsing legal culture is caused by legal drivers who no longer carry ethical and moral values.

The legal system, which is likened to a ship, is unable to reach the pier of justice that it aspires to.

Some of the problems of legal culture caused by the unethical behavior of state administrators are political systems that lead to authoritarianism.

The result of this kind of ethical chaos and political pressure leads to an oligarchic culture in political, state and national life.
