In one quarter, over 257 thousand people started working as informal workers

The country recorded an informality rate of 39.1% in the labor market in the quarter up to October 2023. There were 39.180 million workers working informally in the period, according to data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad Contínua), calculated by the Brazilian Institute of Economics and Statistics (IBGE).

In one quarter, another 257 thousand people started working as informal workers. The total number of vacancies in the job market as a whole in the period grew by 862 thousand new jobs.

“In other words, most of the occupation, of the growth in occupation, was through the formally employed population”, summarized Adriana Beringuy, coordinator of Work and Income at IBGE. “Most of the expansion of occupation was via formality.”

In one quarter, in the informal sector, there was an increase of 87 thousand jobs without a formal contract in the private sector, 18 thousand domestic workers without a formal contract and 175 thousand people in self-employment without a CNPJ. There was a reduction of 14 thousand people working in auxiliary family work and 9 thousand employers without CNPJ.

The employed population working informally grew 0.7% in one quarter. Compared to a year before, the number of informal workers increased by 216 thousand people, an increase of 0.6%.
