Aisha Braveboy, the newly elected leader in Prince George’s County, has already started to reshape the county’s leadership, setting a new direction for the area. She was sworn in on Juneteenth at the University of Maryland.

The ceremony was a gathering of council members, congressional leaders, and former county executives, including U.S. Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, Jack Johnson, and Rushern Baker. The event included prayers, singing, and a presentation from Braveboy’s sorority.

Keynote speaker Gov. Wes Moore emphasized the importance of Braveboy’s commitment to community safety, affordability, and competitiveness. Actress Taraji P. Henson, an Oxon Hill High School graduate, also offered her congratulations and pledged to work with Braveboy.

Before officially taking office, Braveboy began forming her new administration. She named Shawn Joseph as the interim schools superintendent and replaced Malik Aziz as county police chief with George Nader in an interim role.

An email revealed that Braveboy’s administration asked at-will employees to resign. Braveboy indicated that she’s building a new cabinet, but that some individuals will remain in their positions. She also stated that the county will become more business-friendly under her leadership and promised to eliminate obstacles to construction and development.

“We are not going to be second to any other jurisdiction when it comes to being able to move forward on major developments here in Prince George’s County,” she said.

While specifics were limited, Braveboy mentioned she will release a 100-day plan in the upcoming weeks.
