Meet Dinesh Chandra and Devindra Thakar, an elderly couple living in Dhanora village in Shankheshwar area of Gujarat, who have turned their retirement home into a home of nature.

Shankheshwar area of Gujarat is known as Mini Rann due to barren land and less rainfall. Along with the dense forest here, birds were also rarely seen. In such a situation, a teacher couple made up their mind to bring a change in this village and with 25 years of hard work prepared – ‘Nisarga Niketan’

It is the result of the continuous efforts of Dineshchandra Thakar and his wife Devindra Thakar that today people from far and wide come to Nisarga Niketan to see the birds and greenery. This change started in the year 1999. A teacher by profession, Dinesh Chandra and his wife Devindra Ben have always been nature lovers. Talking to The Better India, he says, “We saw a lot of birds dying during the 1984 famine. Our sensitivity was awakened, we could not see and decided that something has to be done for these birds because without birds creation cannot be called creation.

Before retiring, both decided that instead of the city, they would return to the village and again work for the protection of indigenous trees and birds. With this thought, he bought three acres of land in Dhanora village and started planting a few saplings.

He started this work by growing the extinct plants of this area like ber, tamarind and kachnar. He himself used to build a hut, irrigate the soil and plant trees here.

As the plants started growing, so did the birds. Today the situation is that this whole area is filled with 6000 trees of about 200 varieties. In which hundreds of birds of many varieties including peacock, parrot, bulbul, sparrow are seen chirping.

He keeps 100 kg of grains for these birds to eat every day and also gives water. He has also formed an organization named Nisarga Seva Trust for the protection of birds. Through which he is trying to make the whole village green.

On the lines of Nisarga Niketan, today he has also taken up the task of creating 10 more such forests in the village. His efforts for nature have become a source of inspiration for everyone. He has also been awarded the Gujarat Gaurav Samman for his beautiful works.

Hope you too must have got inspiration from the story of this teacher couple.
