According to Dr. Stallkamp, a new COVID-19 strain called XBA-286 has surfaced in the UK, Denmark, South Africa, and now in the United States. However, it remains too early to determine whether this variant is more severe or contagious than previous strains, including the omicron variant.
In anticipation of the upcoming virus season, a new COVID-19 booster will be released in September to combat these newer strains. Medical experts strongly advise individuals to prioritize getting vaccinated with the booster shot.
Dr. Stallkamp compared the vaccine’s efficacy duration to that of the flu vaccine, emphasizing the need for additional protection. “I think one of the reasons we’re seeing a slight uptick is because the vaccines only last for so long. It’s the same as the flu vaccine. The flu vaccine only lasts for six months,” he explained.
The release of the new COVID-19 booster is scheduled for mid-September. This additional dose aims to extend protection against evolving strains, offering individuals a crucial defense against the virus.
