In Russia, the daily increase in new cases of coronavirus for the first time in the entire pandemic exceeded 60 thousand. Over the past day, 63,205 new infections have been registered in the country, the operational headquarters for combating coronavirus infection said on Sunday, January 23.

Peak values ​​for the daily number of infections in Russia are updated for the second day in a row. Just the day before, 57,212 cases of infection were recorded in the country. The total number of officially registered infections has exceeded 11 million (11,108,191).

The largest daily number of new infections was again recorded in Moscow (17,528), St. Petersburg (9,535) and the Moscow Region (7,056).

Reducing the number of hospitalizations

The spread of coronavirus infection in Russia continues amid a marked decrease in the number of hospitalizations due to covid. As of January 23, 6211 people are now in hospitals – 37.3% less than the day before (January 22 – 9902 patients).

Over the past 24 hours, another 679 people died from covid in Russia, the total number of deaths, according to official data, has increased to 326,112.

The increase in the number of infections in Russia occurs against the backdrop of the spread of the omicron variant. According to the headquarters on January 20, the share of “omicron” among the detected cases is 42.8%. The delta variant still remains predominant (56.2%). According to the University of Washington, the peak of infections in Russia will be reached in late January – early February.
