Covid-19 variants: an Italian team participated in the creation of a more effective bispeficic antibody in the fight against Coronavirus

The discovery of different variants of Covid-19, identified in different countries and with greater infectious power, has made the fight against the pandemic more difficult and created great concern among the scientific community. Current vaccines appear to be able to contain the effects of some of these variants but it is not certain that they can do the same with all. Fortunately, there is good news in this respect. A new super monoclonal antibody has been discovered that can fight all major variants of Covid-19.

Covid-19 variants: super monoclonal antibody can fight and prevent the most dangerous ones

The super monoclonal antibody known as CoV-X2 was developed by an international team that also includes researchers from the Policlinico San Matteo in Pavia and would also be able to prevent Coronavirus infection. The bispecific antibody CoV-X2, i.e. which simultaneously recognizes two antigens of the virus, would be more effective than other mono-colon antibodies in inhibiting binding to ACE2. The latter is the receptor used by Covid-19 to attack cells and replicate. The antibody is therefore born from the union in the laboratory of two natural antibodies and this double bond would allow to fight the variants more effectively. The study was published in Nature.

“Thanks to the work of EU-funded researchers, this new discovery could prevent and treat Covid-19 cases, saving lives,” commented Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Community. funded the research project.
