(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 2 – The summer wave of Covid continues with 17,000 new cases recorded in the last week (+26%). This is indicated by the weekly monitoring of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and the Ministry of Health. The transmissibility index (Rt) calculated with data updated to July 31, 2024 and based on cases with hospitalization, as of July 23, 2024 is equal to 1.19 (1.11-1.28), “substantially stable compared to the previous week”. According to the monitoring, as of July 31, the occupancy of hospital beds in the medical area is equal to 3% (1,829 hospitalized), a slight increase compared to the previous week (2.4%). The occupancy of intensive care beds also increased slightly, equal to 0.6% (55 hospitalized), compared to the previous week (0.4%). Hospitalization and mortality rates are higher in the older age groups (hospitalization rate in the 80-89 and over-90 age groups equal to 68 and 118 respectively per 1,000,000 inhabitants, intensive care hospitalization rate in the 70-79, 80-89 and over-90 age groups equal to 1 per 1,000,000 inhabitants and mortality rate in the 80-89 and over-90 age groups equal to 4 and 8 respectively per 1,000,000 inhabitants). The incidence of Covid-19 cases diagnosed and reported in the period 07/25/2024 – 07/31/2024 is 29 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, “slightly increasing compared to the previous week, although remaining low”. The weekly incidence (07/25/2024 – 07/31/2024) of diagnosed and reported cases is slightly increasing in most Regions/PPAA compared to the previous week. The highest incidence was reported in the Campania region (55 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), the lowest in the Marche (1 case per 100,000 inhabitants). The percentage of reinfections is approximately 48%, stable compared to the previous week. Regarding the variants, the data highlight “the co-circulation of different sub-variants of JN.1 that are of international concern. Among these, the proportion of sequencing attributable to the KP.3.1.1 lineage is growing”. (ANSA).
