New lockdowns and restrictions in France to stem Covid infections and the spread of variants. The squeeze was announced today by Prime Minister Jean Castex. The confinement concerns 16 departments, will come into effect starting at midnight on Friday. The measures will be in place for at least four weeks. The measure affects eight departments in the Ile-de-France region of Paris, five in Upper France, the Alpes-Maritimes, the Seine-Maritime and the Eure.

Only essential stores will remain open, including bookstores and music stores. The schools will also remain open, but the high schools will operate with the presence of half of the pupils.
