Omicron 5 runs, Covid infections are increasing in Italy and today the sewers are also a ‘mirror’ to this trend: “The national trend of Sars-CoV-2 concentrations in wastewater has shown a ‘dangerous increase’ (> 30%) in weeks 24 and 25 of 2022 (period 13-26 June), compared to previous weeks. The same upward trend was documented in most of the regions / autonomous provinces “. This is what we read in the latest ISS bulletin on the surveillance of the pandemic coronavirus in wastewater.

The analysis was carried out by the national environmental surveillance network of Sars-CoV-2 on wastewater samples collected in 20 regions / pa. “At week 25 (June 26) – reports the Higher Institute of Health – a total of 6,475 samples were taken”, of which “6,451 were analyzed for Sars-CoV-2 and 87.2% were positive”, with peaks of 100% in Umbria and in the Pa of Bolzano, of over 99% in the Pa of Trento and 98% or more in Calabria and Veneto. Above 90% also Lazio, Lombardy, Marche, Piedmont, Puglia, Sicily and Valle d’Aosta.

“The increase in viral concentrations in waste water – comments the ISS – is in line with the increase in cases observed in almost all regions, driven by the spread of the sub-variant Omicron BA.5”.
