A Guatemalan accused of leading a network linked to the death of 53 migrants on the trailer of a truck in 2022 in Texas appeared in Guatemala in one extradition hearing to the United States.
Rigoberto Miranda47, was arrested on August 21 in the Guatemalan department of San Marcos (west), accused of leading the organization that illegally entered US territory at migrants, who died in June 2022.
The man is accused of being the “leader” of the gang “The Orozcos”dedicated “to migrant trafficking to the United States,” according to the Ministry of the Interior.
The prosecution asked the court to approve the extradition based on the evidence submitted by USA.
“Based on these charges from the indictment of February 7, 2024, the District Court of the United States Joined for the Western District of Texas issued an arrest warrant for the required person,” the prosecutor explained.
The presiding judge of the court, Saul Alvarez, He said the decision would be announced on September 11.
According to US authorities, the migrants died of hyperthermia and dehydration while travelling in a trailer. Of the total number of passengersonly 11 survived.
Four Mexicans were arrested for their alleged involvement in the death of 53 people from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
When the traffickers opened the doors of the trailer, at the end of a nearly three-hour trip to the Texas city of San Antonio, 48 migrants, including a pregnant woman, were dead. Sixteen were taken to hospitals, but five of them died.
Miranda and the others arrested for the events could face life imprisonment in the United States.
