In Germany, two opposing Christmas traditions coincide. We actually celebrate and give presents in the evening. “You dress accordingly in the evenings,” says trend analyst Carl Tillessen from the German Fashion Institute in Cologne. But: We have the corona lockdown and more and more influence from the American Christmas culture.
And in the American tradition, convenience is the focus. “There is a certain tendency towards slumber parties,” says Carl Tillessen. This is expressed, among other things, in unisex clothing that can be worn by both men and women.
Knitted sweaters as a trend
The new relaxation at Christmas can also be traced back to self-knitted sweaters in recent years. From this a kind of competition has developed in the social networks, who wears the most absurd Christmas sweater – from the moose to the reindeer to the naked Santa Claus.
Is such an eye-catcher also suitable for the Christmas holidays? “That depends on the framework within which you are moving. The sweater can be appropriate for relaxed meals with the family on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day – or not, ”says fashion expert Patrick Pendiuk from the men’s magazine GQ.
You need a feeling for how your surroundings react to the item of clothing. “It can also be a fun family tradition at times.”
► So showing up at a conservative meal or going to church like that could go in your pants.
► But caution is also advised when it comes to classics: a business outfit or a chic dress go well with the Christmas feast, but the choice of clothes can quickly turn out to be a dilemma. “The shirt itself is not the best choice, especially when you relax on the couch after dinner and drink a few glasses of wine,” says Patrick Pendiuk.
The combination makes the Christmas outfit
And what goes with the ironically funny ugly sweater or an oblique knitted sweater? “You should wear a jacket with it as simply as possible – and not steal the show from the sweater.” He also recommends dark colors in the combination. That seems calmer.
This is also confirmed by Carl Tillessen. So men could look like women Christmas easily choose the colors gray, white, red, green and black. In addition, a typical tartan check pattern can also be worn. In general: “The woven material in our clothing at Christmas is increasingly being replaced by the knitted material.”
Pendiuk recommends a mix of styles for everyone who doesn’t want to choose between cozy and elegant. “For example a round neck sweater made of cashmere or a turtleneck sweater. You can easily combine it with a jacket. “
For those who do without chic, the following applies: “If you don’t wear a suit, then dark jeans without washing is always a good option.” Chinos are also an option.
