Berlin, Brussels, Riga He went into hiding for almost two days, and Yevgeny Prigozhin spoke up again early Monday evening. The man who had the world in suspense over the weekend and who marched towards Moscow with his Wagner mercenary force justified the armed uprising. “We went to protest, not to overthrow the authorities in the country,” the 62-year-old said in a voice message on Telegram.

The background to the dispute was apparently the Russian leadership’s plans to place private armies like Wagner under the leadership of the Defense Ministry. Prigozhin said his concern was to prevent the “destruction” of the Wagner force and to bring to justice those who had made “mistakes” in the Ukraine war. A nod to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the Russian Army General Staff Valery Gerasimov.

The events of the weekend will keep Russia busy for a while longer, that much is clear. The Russian regime’s power base was shaken, and for several hours the nuclear power seemed on the brink of losing control.
