Credit cooperatives associated with the National Union of Credit Cooperatives (Unacc) obtained net profits of 733 million euros in 2022, 27.43% more than in 2021.

It is about data transferred this Wednesday by the president of Unacc, Manuel Ruiz Escudero, in the general assembly that the association has held in Madrid. These earnings allow almost 84 million euros to be allocated to its education and promotion fund.

On the balance sheet side, the deposits of these entities grew by 4.59%, up to 105,531 million euros, while the number of loans to partners and customers rose to 73,578 million euros, 3.16% more in YoY terms.

Ruiz Escudero has also highlighted that the number of members has reached 1.7 million, 2% more than in 2021, while the employees of the cooperatives amounted to 12,350 at the end of 2022, creating around 200 jobs compared to to the preceding year.

During his speech, Ruiz Escudero has also made a brief review of the economic and social context in which the sector carries out its activity and has highlighted that 2022 “has once again been a complex year, with high inflation that has caused a change in the monetary policy of the central banks that has brought, after more than 10 years, positive interest rates”.

Likewise, he has stated that last year has been an “intense year of negotiation” of different initiatives with the Government, in order to respond to partners and clients, the most vulnerable groups and the people who work in credit cooperatives.

The president of Unacc also highlighted the different commitments made in terms of financial inclusion, such as the “Measures aimed at improving personalized care for the elderly or people with disabilities” or the “Roadmap to strengthen financial inclusion in rural areas ‘ together with the banking associations AEB and CECA.

In this regard, Ruiz Escudero has also stressed that the credit cooperatives associated with Unacc “have the only bank office in more than 370 municipalities of the almost 3,600 that exist in Spain with branches, that is, slightly more than 10% of our offices are the only point of access for the inhabitants of these localities”.

The general assembly has continued with the approval of the annual accounts for the financial year 2022, the management report, and the budgets and the activity plan for 2023, and has welcomed a new partner: the branch in Spain of Banca Popolare Etica Cooperative Society for Azioni.
