Hatred and hate speech are now omnipresent on the internet. The police now want to set an example with a day of action. However, many criminal posts are often not displayed at all.

The police took action nationwide against hatred and hate speech on the Internet on Wednesday morning. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) in Wiesbaden, there were a total of around 130 “police measures” such as house searches and interrogations. The day of action is directed against authors of illegal posts. “Because calls for crimes, threats, coercion or hate speech online are crimes that can be punished with up to five years in prison,” explained the BKA.

According to the information, the police had registered almost 3,400 cases of hate postings in 2022 – in the previous year there were around 2,410 cases. In addition, many criminally relevant posts would not be displayed, the BKA said. In this respect, a large dark field can be assumed. “Hate and hate speech online are breeding ground for radicalization and a source of impetus for acts of violence,” warned the security agency.
