Munich courts have already convicted soccer world champion Jérôme Boateng twice for violent attacks on his ex-girlfriend. But now it continues.

The proceedings against ex-national football players Jérôme Boateng goes to the next round. The main hearing in the appeal proceedings begins on Thursday (10 a.m.) at the Bavarian Supreme Regional Court. According to the court, a decision will be made that day as to whether the Munich I Regional Court’s ruling stands – or whether the process needs to be reopened.

In the second instance, the Munich I regional court sentenced Boateng, now 35, to a fine of 120 daily rates of 10,000 euros each for attacks on his ex-girlfriend during a Caribbean vacation – a total of 1.2 million euros.

“For us, the facts of the case have been more than proven,” said Judge Andreas Forstner in his verdict. Boateng’s defenders, however, had requested an acquittal for the professional footballer. They assumed that his ex-girlfriend had invented and “instrumentalized” the allegations “in the fight for the children.”

Extremely lengthy legal dispute

If the verdict from October 2022 becomes final, the 2014 soccer world champion would have a criminal record. Boateng, his former partner and the public prosecutor’s office appealed against the verdict.

The legal dispute is extremely lengthy. The Munich district court had already imposed a higher fine on Boateng in 2021, but the number of daily rates was only half as high – 60 daily rates of 30,000 euros each, a total of 1.8 million euros. Those convicted of more than 90 daily rates are considered to have a criminal record. Now it is the third court’s turn in this matter.

If the verdict is overturned, the case would be referred back to another chamber of the regional court – for the fourth round in the proceedings.
