Criminals in Russia sent to battle: “You will explode if captured”

This is how Putin recruits prisoners to join as mercenaries in Ukraine. The prisoners will be pardoned if they survive six months. They were warned not to fall into captivity

A Putin man has been recorded offering amnesty to violent criminals and dangerous criminals locked up in a Russian prison – if they survive fighting in Ukraine for six months.

Kach Wagner’s boss, Yevgeny Prigozhin, told the prisoners that they should take their own lives rather than fall into captivity in Ukraine, holding one grenade for the enemy and one for themselves.

A video posted on social media shows Prigozhin telling criminals that the options are to either become war heroes or die as deserters, all while the Kremlin ramps up its recruitment of prisoners after suffering a humiliating defeat against Ukraine’s military in the east. “This is a hard war, not even close to the people like in Chechnya,” he was recorded on video telling them. “My ammunition consumption is two and a half times higher than in the Battle of Stalingrad, where there were almost two million casualties,” he said.

Those facing capture by Ukraine are ordered to use grenades to kill themselves rather than fall into enemy hands. They were warned that they would be executed instantly with a bullet in the head if they were captured. A secretly filmed video shows Prigozhin, 61, admitting he represents Wagner’s private army, which Putin has deployed in Ukraine.

They should take their lives, and not be taken captive, he said. “You must take two grenades on you,” he continued, “one grenade for our enemies and one for yourself, the second sin is alcohol and drugs which are prohibited in the war zone, the third sin is robbery.”
