Crisis at Sea: Tilos Mayor’s Encounter Reflects Divided Views on Migrant Arrivals

by time news
A Facebook post in which the mayor of the remote island of Maria Kamma describes an incident she had with a woman at the port of Tilos, following the arrival of 106 migrants rescued by the coast guard on the island.

In her post, the mayor of Tilos refers to “two sides of the coin” during the arrival of the 106 rescued individuals.

On one side, according to Mrs. Kamma, “men, crying and holding many of their small children in their arms, thanking the coast guards and trying to kiss their hands…” and on the other side, a lady who was fishing with her husband and who asked, according to the mayor of Tilos, “to throw them into the sea.”

At the end, when the woman tried to film the mayor of Tilos, Mrs. Kamma told her, “madam, this island is not for you.”

This evening, those of us who were at the port of Tilos were faced with both sides of the coin… One hundred six (106) refugees, among them many children, were safely transported to our island. The scenes I personally witnessed shattered me…
Men, crying and holding many of their small children in their arms, thanking the coast guards and trying to kiss their hands…

The coast guard officers with extraordinary care lifting children and the injured and bringing them down from the ship. Police, medical staff, and nurses were present, as well as residents of the island offering dry clothes, bread, shoes, and whatever else they could quickly bring… Unfortunately, many little kids and babies…

And suddenly a “lady” who was fishing with her husband in the port, apparently annoyed by the “noise” (šŸ˜‰ this uproar!), starts yelling where are you taking them, why are you gathering them? Thinking I was disagreeing with the refugee registration process by the coast guard, I reply that, madam, this is how it is done, the coast guards lead them to the port authority for registration. Not at all!

“Throw them into the sea!” That was the wish of the “lady”! And she starts giving me lessons! How we must keep our country and lands Greek, how we are Christians and “they” have no place here! To chase them away, to throw them into the sea, as they bring them to our islands, referring to the coast guard officers who transported 106 human souls; that was their crime! That’s why the woman got angry! She watched the coast guard men helping the children disembark from the boat, and she got upset because they did not speak Greek and were not little Christians!!! We were thanking them, and she was just about to insult them!

And she even had the audacity to want to film me because I dared to tell her how wrong she was. Who do you think you are? I tell her who I am, now tell me your name, I reply; she told me a name, I don’t know if it’s real, but I truly told her and I will say it again:

Madam, this island is not for you!
