The images that reached us over the weekend from the State of Chiapas are each more disturbing: hundreds of people cheer the arrival, in the area of the Frontera Comalapa municipality, in Chiapas, of a convoy of armed civilians, presumably members of the organization criminal organization called the Sinaloa Cartel.

Around a dozen vehicles, some of them equipped with high-powered weapons, paraded before the residents who seemed to express their joy at the arrival of the criminal group, although some widespread versions say that the act may not have been spontaneous, but rather forced by the members of the aforementioned cartel themselves.

Regardless of whether it was a voluntary act or a staged act, one thing is very clear: organized crime mafias operate in that region in broad daylight and without any restrictions.

In this regard, the Diocese of San Cristóbal issued a harsh statement on Saturday in which it called on the three levels of government to stop the crisis of violence that is being suffered in Chiapas due to the confrontation between cartels that are fighting for control of the territory.

“Criminal groups have taken over our territory and we find ourselves in a state of siege, under social psychosis with narco blockades, which use civil society as a human barrier, forcing them to be there and put their lives and that of their families at risk.” says the text signed by the bishop of San Cristóbal, Rodrigo Aguilar Martínez and his assistant Luis Manuel López Alfaro.

Religious leaders demand, given the situation in that region, immediate action for urgent attention to cases of violence, the arrest of criminal leaders, respect for educational centers and the reestablishment of social order, among other aspects. .

In the statement, the Diocese goes even further and points out that “the silence of the authorities puts human integrity at risk and shows us a failed state that is overwhelmed and/or colluded with criminal groups, from municipal and regional prosecutors, presidents municipal, state and federal governments.

This is a very serious statement, but the images we have seen this weekend seem to justify it. It is unacceptable that the population of that region of the country is at the mercy of crime and that the State proves incapable of rescuing them from such a reality.

It would be expected that, given the reported situation, there would be an immediate reaction from the Government of the Republic and that this would be in the correct sense, that is, to restore the rule of law and thereby guarantee the integrity of citizens.

No one wants to come to the conclusion that we live in a failed state, but addressing that perception requires concrete and forceful actions on the part of those who have the responsibility of guaranteeing everyone’s safety.
