Gaza’s Health Care System Reaches ‘Point of No Return’ as Hospitals Face Repeated Attacks

The health care system in the war-torn Gaza Strip, already facing strained supplies, has been pushed to its limit as hospitals in the region continue to come under attack. The Red Cross warned on Friday that Gaza’s healthcare system has “reached the point of no return,” putting the lives of thousands of wounded, sick, and displaced people at risk.

The International Committee of the Red Cross issued a statement expressing concern over the state of Gaza’s healthcare system, describing it as “overstretched, under-supplied, and increasingly insecure.” The warning came as a number of hospitals in the northern Gaza Strip were reportedly bombed on Thursday and Friday, including the largest hospital in the region, the Al-Shifa Complex, which has been serving as a refuge for 60,000 people. The Rantisi Hospital and the Indonesian Hospital were also among the targeted facilities.

The situation has been further exacerbated as Israeli military operations have taken place near these hospitals. An Israeli military spokesman confirmed that major operations had been carried out near the Al-Shifa Hospital, intensifying fears of potential bombings that could impact the safety of patients and medical staff.

The director of the Al-Shifa Medical Complex, Muhammad Abu Salima, expressed concern that the hospital and its occupants could be bombed at any moment. Despite the imminent threat, the medical teams remain committed to not leaving the hospital and will not abandon the patients inside it.

In addition to the bombings, Israeli tanks have been reported to be present near other hospitals in the region, including the Rantissi, Al-Nasr, and Al-Ayoun hospitals. The Indonesian Hospital was also reportedly bombed and destroyed, resulting in injuries to medical staff and displaced individuals. The Al-Awda Hospital near the Indonesian hospital was subjected to intense bombing, leading to the destruction of all ambulances on the premises.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health has appealed to international institutions to intervene and protect the sick, children, and displaced individuals in the face of these ongoing attacks on Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure. As the healthcare system continues to face severe challenges, the need for immediate intervention and support from the international community has become increasingly urgent.]
