The riots linked to the reform of the electoral body written by the separatists have caused a sudden suspension between May 13 and June 5 of the company’s traffic, which provides most of the air connections between Grande Terre and the other islands of ‘ archipelago After the transfer of 270 of approximately 350 workers at Air Calédonie on partial unemployment, the company’s management is considering a general redundancy process which should involve between 100 and 130 people.

“Loss of business income of 14.2 million euros”

Since May, New Caledonia has been in the grip of an outbreak of violence that it has not experienced since the early 1980s so it is difficult to achieve security while there is no certainty within the region. For this period, the volume of tourists is 70% lower than that recorded before the beginning of the conflict. “The immediate effect of this reduction in traffic is the loss of commercial income of 14.2 million euros for 2024,” Daniel Hombouy, director general of the company, told the press.

In 2023, Air Calédonie has a turnover of 37.7 million euros. “Weekends are complicated and we only have visibility until August,” emphasized Daniel Hombouy. “If we fail to carry these measures, we will be withholding payments,” he warned.

To turn things around, the administration is counting on receiving aid of 5 million euros from New Caledonia, the majority shareholder of the company. Discussions are also ongoing with the State to find other financial support.

Management has drawn up its social plan by counting on the stabilized traffic forecast of around 300,000 people in 2025, ie 35% less than those planned for 2024. The plan should be done, in addition to other measures, to find income balance money next year, he hopes.
