The main force of the Korean national team, aiming for 5 gold medals and 15th place overall, has entered the decisive battleground of Paris, France. There are concerns both inside and outside that this could be the most difficult Olympics ever, but the athletes are determined to achieve results that exceed expectations with the determination that “crisis is opportunity.”
The main delegation of 48 players, including 18 executives from the Korea Sports Council headquarters and 20 fencing and 10 table tennis players, arrived at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport on the afternoon of the 20th, local time.
Although they were expected to be exhausted after a long flight, all the players, led by the national fencing team’s flag bearer, Gu Bon-gil (Korea Sports Promotion Foundation), entered Paris with bright expressions.
Korea sent a total of 260 people (143 athletes, 90 match officials, and 27 headquarters officials) to compete in 21 events at this competition.
Starting with the departure of the badminton and shooting teams on the 12th, they are heading to Paris according to the schedule for each event. After the departure of the main team on the 20th, artistic swimming (22nd), race walking (24th), diving, taekwondo, and horse riding (25th) are scheduled to join in Paris.
After arriving in Paris, headquarters executives and table tennis players will enter the Olympic Athletes’ Village, while fencing players will enter the ‘Team Korea Paris Platform,’ a pre-training camp and meal support center established 12 years after the 2012 London Olympics.
Korea aims to win 5-6 gold medals and rank 15th overall in this competition. This is a lower expectation compared to the previous goal of being in the top 10.
Regarding this, Lee Ki-heung, the president of the Korea Sports Council, said, “I feel nervous upon arriving in Paris,” and expressed his determination, saying, “I will do my best to achieve better results than my initial goal.”
Ahead of the upcoming Olympics, Korea has set up the ‘Team Korea Paris Platform’ at the French National Defense Sports Center (CNDS) in Fontainebleau, near Paris, France. The training center and catering center have been created in an environment similar to the Jincheon Athletes’ Village, helping athletes adapt to the local environment.
The team will begin its full-scale competition starting with the opening ceremony held on the Seine River in Paris on the 26th.
