Cristina Acidini: “The sound of water, the days of Damascus”

by time news

Several days of hospitalization, yet only now do I realize that I have a fountain behind me, gurgling invisibly without stopping. Of course it is the water that bathes the oxygen in a container, before sending it into the pipes and into my nose. Even just the sound of the water, you know, is good. And nothing prevents me from representing the fountain, which I do not see, as a graceful spring from a majolica basin in the cool of a mosque or a Mediterranean alhambra: thanks to the sun on the floor, I let the sound guide me towards a I remember. The water cackles in the ablution shrine, in the enclosure of the Umayydi Mosque in Damascus … the sun of a warm December lights up the mosaics, a green and golden luxuriance of landscapes. In Damascus, a secret and precious city like a rough geode full of crystals, in 2007 I gave lessons on mosaic in the newly demilitarized citadel. How free in comparison to these days those days seem to me!
