Cristina López Pérez (Salou, 1989), better known as Cristinini, can be considered a great visionary. At the age of 25, she chose to put aside her brilliant academic training to dedicate herself to video games. At her house, her father considered that “she was wasting time”, and now eight years later her daughter is a reference in the world of youtubers.

Now, he also begins to make himself known on television. On Monday she made her debut as a co-host of the ‘Grand Prix’, although not everyone appreciated her work on social networks.

The co-host received numerous comments, many of them critical. Her role in the program is strange for viewers who lived through the old format of the ‘Grand Prix’. She must broadcast the tests as if she were on a Twitch or YouTube live. Platforms alien to the vast majority of viewers. If we add to this that, during a large part of the program, she barely understood her due to technical failures… her debut was not as expected.

But beyond the criticism, the presence of a woman like Cristinini in a successful program like the ‘Grand Prix’ confirms the establishment of alternative platforms like Twitch in society. Youtubers do like them and they can be transferred to the small screen, as was demonstrated on Monday. Children who had never seen ‘Grand Prix’ (it had not been broadcast for 18 years) tuned in to TVE. 40% of kids between the ages of 4 and 12, the target audience for platforms like Twitch, who were glued to the TV at that time, chose Ramón García’s program. And not only because of the Biscayan presenter, but also because of the presence of Cristinini, who is one of the most important content creators in this country with more than three million followers.

From tourism to video games

But Cristinini’s path to success has not been easy. She tells it herself in a documentary called ‘My story’, which covers her trajectory from the first day she launched her YouTube channel until her debut on Twitch. Some years in which she was “an introverted girl who did not leave her room much and with a small circle of friends.”

With two university degrees, a master’s degree and a higher degree, the young Cristina chose to combine her work in the tourism sector with her passion for video games. She became known on YouTube and started a new life as a ‘streamer’ when she tried the League of Legends video game. From that moment on, she left her job as an accountant and became a clerk in the well-known Game franchise. At home they did not understand.

The successes on YouTube allowed him to gain a foothold on Movistar pay television, on his esports channel. There he presented The Gaming House program until it closed. It seemed that the tastes of the new generations were not transferred to traditional television.

He tried his luck on Twitch, a new platform that was emerging at the time, and found it. She established herself thanks to her accumulated fame during her stage on YouTube and Movistar, and soon exceeded three million followers. She was already a content creator. But not everything that glitters is gold, loneliness is a feeling that haunts streamers: «Although it may not seem like it, being a streamer is very lonely. I have felt very alone, many times in many aspects. Just like that, hit the stop button and start crying ». This is how Cristinini told it firsthand in her documentary.

Now, he returns to television, and he does so in a program that marked his childhood and that of many generations in the 90s. It had not been broadcast for 18 years but the ‘Grand Prix’ has returned. And who better than a ‘Grand Prix girl’ -that’s how she defines herself- to narrate the emotion that the tests transmit.
