Kenneth Branagh is Hercule Poirot in Mystery in Venice. 20th Century Studios

The third installment of the adventures of Hercule Poirot from the hand of Kenneth Branagh It is quite different from its two predecessors. For now, it is not based on one of the detective’s most famous novels, but rather on one of the last, The apples.

It is also not a faithful adaptation to the lyrics of Agatha Christie. Neither had the previous ones, but, in this case, the script presents a completely new story, which only takes a few names and some camouflaged wink from the original novel.

It is not a truly detective film either, although there is crime and there is investigation, although Branagh He is more interested in other things, straying more into the realm of terror and the ghostly.

Mystery in Venice is closer to Die Still (that worthy second feature film by the director) than its two predecessors.

As in that one, here the trace of Orson Welles It is premeditated and obvious. Not only because of the fascination of the director of Citizen Kane not because of magic and sleight of hand (very important here in the plot), but because of the prolific use of aberrant shots in the staging. Branagh plays with the ghostly atmosphere of the mansion where the story takes place, telling not only a (possible) ghost story, but introducing a speech about the broken Europe after two world wars.

Cast of MYSTERY IN VENICE

The choral cast seems more compact than in the previous two, highlighting the presence of the always splendid Michelle Yeoh, Riccardo Scarmacio y Camille Cottin.

Curiously, despite his infidelities to Christie, this seems to us to be the most solid and best resolved film of the trilogy. Mystery in Venice. 20th Century Studios
