Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud said that in a democratic country there will be criticism of the government. But if it is destructive criticism, it is not desirable.

He said this at the discussion meeting titled ‘Role of media in building Bangladesh’s image in the outside world’ organized by International Relations Reporters Forum (IRF), an organization of international relations professional journalists, at National Press Club on Sunday (March 31).

President of IRF Hasan Mahamud presided over the event. Conducted by General Secretary Mahmudul Haque Sujan.

At this time, the minister said that the media should highlight the positive aspects of the country to the outside world. Criticism of the government is inevitable in a democratic country. But if it is destructive criticism, it is not desirable. And there is no merit in portraying the country negatively.

Hashan Mahmud said that any negative news about Bangladesh is published by the media of the country several times bigger than the media of foreign countries. It tarnishes the country’s image. When an international organization publishes negative news about Bangladesh, the domestic media also propagates it.

He said, the news must be published. But care should be taken that it does not have a negative effect.

Alleging that BNP is spreading false propaganda against the country, the minister said that their party leader is spreading false propaganda about the country through social media through paid agents from abroad. And the people of the country are confused by that. They spread rumors about Padma Bridge, spread false propaganda about Corona vaccination. Now the boycott of Indian products has started again. The mainstream media should be vocal against them.

IRF president Hasan Mahmud said, according to the current context, we consider the title ‘Role of media in building the image of Bangladesh in the outside world’ to be a timely and important issue. We hope that the process of transition from digital to smart Bangladesh will make Bangladesh a modern technology country and a developed and prosperous Bangladesh. Smart Bangladesh will be affordable, sustainable, inclusive, knowledge-based, intellectual and innovative.

He said, we are already entering the smart Bangladesh and the fourth industrial revolution. Smart Bangladesh is basically going to integrate three areas – physical, digital and biological – in a way never seen before. In this situation, the role of media is very important in the process of protecting and enhancing the country’s image in the international arena as well as in the country.

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief was also present at the event. Mohibbur Rahman, former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Rajshahi-6 Constituency MP Mohammad Shahriar Alam, Director General (Public Diplomacy Wing) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sehli Sabrin, veteran journalist Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Omar Farooq, news editor of Bangladesh Television. .
